About
I’m deeply interested in the relationship between society & technology, and I’m passionate about building ethical ML/AI systems that can tackle the world’s biggest problems.
I’m an optimist to the core. I’m insatiably curious, interested in lots of topics, and can get lost for hours exploring datasets or learning about new things. I am most energized when ideating & building with other people.
Now
We are at an inflection point in AI. Advances in large foundation models like GPT-3 and DALL-E represent a paradigm shift not only in how ML is used, but also who is able to use it.
1.) Pre-trained models means that companies no longer need to employ scarce + expensive ML experts.
2.) Few/zero-shot learning means no need for creating labor intensive labelled datasets.
3.) Prompt based interfaces means that anyone regardless of technical skill can now engage directly with ML.
4.) Emergent/generalizable capabilities means that one model can do many tasks, and the best people to discover those use cases are the people closest to the problems.
These four properties taken together represent a shift in the accessibility curve for ML/AI, and represent a massive opportunity for the companies who help onboard this next generation of users. I'm currently exploring use cases for Foundation Models as an Entrepreneur in Residence at the Allen Institute for AI.
Next
The pace of change in the capabilities and adoption of AI is only going to increase over the next few years. Many of the best practices and interaction patterns for working with foundation models have not yet been established. I am excited for the opportunity to invent the future, and critically, to be a part of making sure that this technology is deployed responsibly into society.
Past
I spent the past ~8 years at Facebook and Amazon, including two years working internationally in Berlin. I’ve managed a diverse portfolio of products, mostly consumer focused, but B2B as well (including both product led growth and enterprise sales models). I intentionally looked for roles that would expose me to new domains, functions, and business models in order to develop a broad perspective.
At the same time, a recurring theme through all of my past roles has been an emphasis on data. I am a data-driven decision maker and have extensive experimentation experience. I have led technical data strategies to implement analytics systems end-to-end (event instrumentation, data warehouse modeling, through to presentation layers + BI). I have experience being the product leader for ML teams, both developing/applying machine learning models, as well as implementing underlying ML ops/infrastructure.
I also have a strong business background. My bachelors and masters degrees are in accounting. I've managed multi-million dollar retail businesses & supplier relationships/negotiations. I was part of the team that launched Amazon's paid music streaming service, where I helped develop branding and was responsible for multi-million dollar paid marketing campaigns that drove outcomes across the funnel. As a product manager, my first role was in Growth and many of my product mental models are based on Growth PM principles. I've led international expansion of multiple businesses end to end including go-to-market.
